Tire wear FAQ.
When should I replace my tires?
The US legal minimum is 2/32" tread depth, but safety experts recommend replacing at 4/32" — especially in wet conditions. The "penny test" (Lincoln's head disappearing = 2/32") is for legal limit only. Use a quarter for the 4/32" safety threshold.
How long do tires typically last?
Most passenger tires last 25,000–75,000 miles depending on quality, driving style, alignment, and inflation. Tires also age regardless of use — rubber degrades after 6–10 years, so always replace tires older than 6 years even if tread looks fine.
Does driving style affect tire wear?
Significantly. Hard acceleration and braking can cut tire life by 50%. Proper inflation is the single biggest factor — underinflated tires wear faster on the outer edges; overinflated tires wear in the center. Rotate every 5,000–8,000 miles for even wear.
