A higher voluntary deductible (also called "voluntary excess") on your Own Damage cover cuts your premium but costs you more when you file a claim. See the premium you'd save, the extra risk you'd take on, and how long it takes to break even.

Verdict
If you rarely file Own Damage claims and can cover the higher excess from savings, the lower premium usually wins over time.
How it works.
Note: this is separate from the compulsory excess (fixed by IRDAI by engine cc), which applies to every Own Damage claim regardless of your voluntary choice. Raising the voluntary excess only affects the Own Damage portion of a Comprehensive policy - it has no effect on Third-Party premium.
Frequently asked questions.
What is a voluntary deductible / excess?
Indian comprehensive car insurance policies have two deductibles: a compulsory excess (fixed by IRDAI, based on engine cc) and an optional voluntary deductible/excess you choose yourself. Raising your voluntary excess lowers your Own Damage premium - this calculator compares two voluntary excess levels.
When does a higher voluntary excess make sense?
When you have the cash to cover the higher excess without stress, and you rarely file Own Damage claims. The premium savings compound every year, so if you go several claim-free years (and keep building your No Claim Bonus) you come out well ahead. If money is tight or you file often, a lower excess is safer.
Should I really keep the difference in savings?
Yes - that's the key. The math only works if you set aside enough to cover the higher excess when a claim happens. If a surprise ₹7,500–10,000 bill would be a hardship, the lower excess buys you peace of mind that's worth the extra premium.
Does a higher excess affect small claims too?
It can discourage filing small claims, which may actually help - frequent small claims can affect your No Claim Bonus at renewal. Many drivers pay minor dent/paint damage out of pocket regardless, making a higher voluntary excess a natural fit.
