Find out how much weight your pickup (Tata Ace, Mahindra Bolero Pik-up, Isuzu D-Max) can safely carry - and how much is left after passengers, cargo, and a trailer's tongue weight.

Payload Used

How payload works.

Max Payload = GVW − Kerb Weight Currently Loaded = Passengers + Cargo + Tongue Weight Remaining = Max Payload − Currently Loaded

Payload is different from towing capacity. Payload is what rides in/on the vehicle; towing capacity is what you pull behind it. A trailer's tongue weight counts against payload, so heavy towing eats into what you can carry. Overloading beyond GVW is also an offence under Indian motor vehicle rules for commercial vehicles.

Frequently asked questions.

What is GVW?

Gross Vehicle Weight is the maximum a fully loaded pickup or commercial vehicle should weigh - including the vehicle itself, passengers, and all cargo - and is the figure used for RTO registration category. Exceeding it strains the brakes, tyres, and suspension, and can also affect your vehicle's registration/insurance validity.

Does towing reduce my payload?

Yes. A trailer pushes down on the hitch with its tongue weight (usually 10-15% of trailer weight), and that load counts against your payload capacity, not just towing capacity.

Where do I find my exact payload?

Check the RC (registration certificate) and the manufacturer's plate/sticker on the driver's door jamb or B-pillar - it lists the GVW and unladen weight for your specific vehicle as built, which is more accurate than brochure figures.
