Find out how much your pickup or SUV (e.g. Tata Yodha, Isuzu D-Max V-Cross, Mahindra Bolero Pik-up) can safely tow after accounting for passengers and cargo - and check whether a specific trailer is within your limit.

How towing capacity works.
Always stay within the manufacturer's maximum tow rating and hitch rating too - the combined weight limit is only one of several limits. Tongue weight should be 10-15% of the trailer weight for stable towing. Note that trailer towing in India isn't regulated identically to the US GCWR system - always verify with your vehicle's manual and local RTO requirements.
Frequently asked questions.
What is GVW / GCVW in the Indian context?
Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) is the RTO-registered maximum weight of a fully loaded vehicle, used for registration category and tax purposes. A combined-weight figure (vehicle + trailer) is the practical equivalent of the US "GCWR" for towing math, though India does not regulate trailer towing identically to the US - always check your specific pickup/SUV manufacturer's tow rating and local RTO rules before towing.
What is tongue weight and why does it matter?
Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer puts on the hitch - ideally 10-15% of trailer weight. Too little causes dangerous trailer sway; too much overloads the rear axle.
Can I tow at my maximum capacity?
It's best to leave a margin. Towing near the limit increases wear, reduces braking performance, and hurts fuel economy (km/l). Many experts suggest staying under 80% of your max rating.
