How the on-road price works.

Ex-Showroom = Base Price + GST + Compensation Cess (if applicable) On-Road Price = Ex-Showroom + RTO Road Tax + Registration & Handling + Insurance

Unlike the US, India has no separate state "sales tax" on cars. Instead, GST (usually 28% for passenger vehicles) plus a compensation cess are baked into the ex-showroom price you see advertised. On top of that, your state government charges RTO road tax at registration - a separate, state-specific levy that can add another 7-20%+ depending on where you live and the car's price bracket. The on-road price is what actually leaves your bank account, often ₹1-2 lakh or more above the ex-showroom figure.

Why the on-road price beats the EMI conversation

Dealers often lead with a monthly EMI figure because it hides the real cost. Two deals with a similar EMI can differ by tens of thousands of rupees once you account for tenure, insurance bundling, and handling charges. Always ask for the on-road price - the single total covering the vehicle, GST/cess, RTO tax, registration, and insurance - and compare that number across dealers and cities.

Road tax varies a lot by state

RTO road tax is set by each state government, not the central government, so the same car can have a meaningfully different on-road price depending on where it's registered. Some states use flat percentage slabs; others use tiered slabs that charge a higher percentage on costlier cars. Because these rates change periodically, always confirm the current rate with your local RTO or dealer rather than relying on a fixed figure.

Dealer charges: mandatory vs optional

GST, cess, RTO road tax, and basic third-party insurance are legally mandatory and non-negotiable. Registration and handling charges are a real dealer cost but can sometimes be discussed. Everything else on the add-on menu - extended warranty, fabric/paint protection, accessories - is optional and can usually be declined or bought independently for less. Ask for an itemized on-road price breakdown and cross out anything you didn't request.

Frequently asked questions.

Does India have a state sales tax on cars like the US?

No. India moved to a unified GST (Goods and Services Tax) system, so there is no separate state sales tax on vehicles. Instead, cars attract GST (usually 28% for most passenger vehicles) plus a compensation cess that varies by engine size, length, and fuel type. On top of that, states charge their own RTO road tax at registration, which is separate from GST.

How much is GST and cess on a car in India?

Most passenger cars fall in the 28% GST slab. The compensation cess on top varies widely - roughly 1% for small hybrids/EVs-adjacent categories up to 20-22% for larger SUVs and bigger-engine petrol/diesel cars - depending on engine capacity, length, and ground clearance. The ex-showroom price you see quoted by a dealer already includes GST and cess; this calculator lets you add them on top of a base price if you're estimating from a pre-tax figure.

What is RTO road tax and how much is it?

Road tax is a state government levy paid at registration, on top of GST. It typically ranges 7-20% of the ex-showroom price depending on the state and the vehicle's price bracket - some states apply steeper slabs for costlier cars. This varies significantly by state, so treat any percentage here as an estimate and confirm with your local RTO before budgeting.

What is the difference between ex-showroom price and on-road price?

Ex-showroom price is the vehicle cost including GST and cess, before you can drive it away. On-road price adds RTO road tax, registration and handling charges, and mandatory insurance - the full amount you actually pay to take delivery.

Is insurance mandatory when registering a car in India?

Yes. At minimum, third-party liability insurance is legally mandatory to register and drive a car in India. Most buyers also take comprehensive cover, which is usually bundled into the on-road price quoted by dealers.

Which dealer charges are negotiable?

Handling and logistics charges are sometimes negotiable, and dealer add-ons like extended warranty, fabric protection, and accessories are almost always optional - you can decline them. GST, cess, and RTO road tax are government charges you cannot negotiate. Always ask for an itemized on-road price quote in writing before booking.
